Do You See What I See? Discovering the Obvious

Robert Hanley

THIS BOOK IS ABOUT finding a better, more meaningful life. Robert Hanley has an insightful way of looking at the world-finding deeper meaning in everyday events that seem to float past the observations of most people. His unique perception has helped make his life better, bringing him greater understanding, joy, fulfillment, and peace. He reveals his common sense process through wise, humorous, and heartwarming real-life tales taken from his own personal experiences. They may well make you laugh, cry, think, and help you to see the common threads of what he calls “discovering the obvious.” Whether filling up his car at a gas station or having his teeth cleaned at the dentist, auditioning for a film starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino or giving the eulogy at Dean Martin’s memorial, the universal truths and values Robert uncovers in these anecdotes and stories relay the everyday applicability of a simple perspective that can provide enormous benefits to each of us in our respective journeys through life.

TESTIMONIALS

“You have given me homily material. In a very subtle way, [Robert] brings in faith…the way God reveals Himself. If you were looking for a simple, good gift . . . you couldn’t go wrong with this. Anybody would like it – atheist, agnostic, deeply religious person. It’s just good human wisdom!”— His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York

“There’s a lot of wisdom here in these little stories. I am a better man for having read this book.” — Charles Champlin, Arts Editor Emeritus, Los Angeles Times

“It’s rare that one comes across a book that is so beautifully written, the contents of which are so wonderful and inspiring, that you have the sensation of coasting down a gentle slope on a big old, fire engine red, Schwinn bicycle, passing as you go marvelous trees from which you are able to pluck the choicest fruits of wisdom and insight. This is a fantastic book! You will take it with you wherever you go because you will not be able to put it down. Get it for anyone and everyone on your gift list.” – Fr. Lawrence Tucker, SOLT, author of To Whom the Heart Decided to Love

“This is a fascinating, fast read book. In each interesting episode we discover again and again the joy of relishing the inner gifts we have as a way to peace, contentment and fulfillment, rather than entering the rat race of doing more and acquiring more things. Robert Hanley is a person comfortable in his own skin and he invites us to enjoy being who we are called to be. While most authors write from the perspective of experience, Hanley writes from the perspective of eternity, like he’s already in heaven calling us home. This is a must-read book!” –Bishop Emeritus Robert Hermann, Archdiocese of St. Louis, author of Come Alive in Jesus

“Through a series of charming vignettes about his journey and those of the people he has met, Robert Hanley has woven a welcome tapestry of worthy lessons for practical and spiritual growth and a better life. Perseverance, fortitude, humility, dealing with humiliation, contentment, coincidence or providence, and faith all come to light in these stories, with readers being invited to reflect upon who they really are—and who they want to be and the choices they make in life. This engaging book of wisdom and love is one that you will want to read again and again.” — Most Rev. Wilton D. Gregory, Archbishop of Washington

“I so enjoyed it! Practical, down to earth, but filled with great wisdom.” — Most Rev. Gerald Wilkerson, D.D., Archdiocese of L.A., San Fernando Pastoral Region

“Robert is truly onto something in these simple, beautiful and insightful vignettes on life. He has prompted in me the memory of a line from a song in Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Mass’ in which we are reminded that, ‘God is the simplest of all.’ Well, in his book Robert takes us on a journey that is both simple and sublime. I simply loved it and suspect that you will too!” — Most Rev. Joseph V. Brennan, Diocese of Fresno, California

“Written with insight, compassion, and love, with humor as a bonus. ‘The Leash’ chapter touched me and tickled me.” — George Shapiro, Executive Producer, Seinfeld

“This is a book that distills truth from the smallest–and most profound–of human experiences.” — Gordon Livingston, M.D., author of Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart

“Everyone loves a short book with good stories, humor, and life lessons. Robert Hanley has given us one–while reminding us to look for meaning in everyday events, to be forgiving, and to be humble. A heartwarming read!” — Hal Urban, author of Life’s Greatest Lessons

“Robert Hanley’s writing is filled with charm, grace, and style. Best of all, he is a very special storyteller. Enjoy.” — Mike Downey, columnist, Chicago Tribune

“Delightful! Robert tells his story quickly and effectively while delivering valuable insights. He entertains as he shares what’s inside him . . . and invites us to reflect on what’s inside ourselves.” — Rev. Bob Bonnot, Sr. VP, Programming, Hallmark Channel

“A beautiful book written with wisdom and love.” — Cristina Carlino, Founder of philosophy

“I think these are nice stories, nicely told by a very nice man. I also think I’ve got to get a thesaurus.” — Jim Brogan, stand-up comedian, writer, and talent coordinator, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

“I read it at night before bed for many nights! I appreciated your appreciation of events you express as bite size digestible snacks. A worthy undertaking, since that is really what our lives are made up of – bite size snacks to relish every day.” — Trina Paulus, author, Hope for the Flowers

by Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson and Prof. Robert Hubbard

The Story of Holy Apostles College and Seminary is a yearbook of over sixty years of a Catholic seminary and college located in picturesque Cromwell, Connecticut. Dr. Toolin-Wilson and Prof. Hubbard begin with a brief overview of the first years of Holy Apostles, including its founder, Fr. Eusebe Menard, OFM. They next use words and pictures to describe the vibrant Holy Apostles community. This community is guided by bishops, rectors, faculty, and staff whose concern is the development of Catholic ordained, religious, and lay faithful leaders. The authors emphasize the stability of Holy Apostles in its mission of forming Catholic leaders. They document its development from a small school with fewer than ten students to an institution serving a diverse student body composed of many ethnic and national groups globally through its online programs and residentially on its home campus. Among these groups are vocations to the priesthood, candidates to the permanent diaconate, religious sisters and brothers, and the laity. 440 full-color photographic pages!

TESTIMONIALS

“I want to thank and to congratulate both Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson and her co-author Robert Hubbard for this interesting publication. Most of all, I am thankful for their dedication and love of Holy Apostles College and Seminary. Beyond doubt, our fine and worthy academic and spiritual institution is more of a ‘family’ than most higher learning institutions. Our founder, Father Eusebe Menard, O.F.M., had a dream and a charism from the Holy Spirit, which is alive and vibrant since from before the Vatican Council II and into this millennium: ‘to promote, form and accompany youth and adults in their vocation to the priesthood and to other ministries in the Church.’ Certainly, Holy Apostles is a ‘hidden treasure’ in the Connecticut valley and has brought literally thousands of students and visitors, international and local, to discover the lovely and historical city of Cromwell. May the Lord continue to bless this vital apostolate with new dimensions and horizons of becoming ‘missionary disciples’.” — Very Rev. Edward J. Przygocki, M.S.A., Chancellor of Holy Apostles College and Seminary

“I find this book to be a captivating journey across the first sixty years of our history.” – Fr. Peter Kucer, MSA, STD, a 2001 graduate of Holy Apostles College and Seminary and currently President-Rector

“Holy Apostles College and Seminary is a miracle of the Divine Providence in its foundation as well as in its continued existence. This story by Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson and Prof. Bob Hubbard accurately captures that miracle. I thank the Divine Lord with all my heart for giving me the grace to work there to the formation of priests, religious and committed lay people since 1998. Long life to HACS!” – Fr. Michel Legault, MSA, Professor of Philosophy, Holy Apostles College & Seminary

“Cheers for the beautiful history of Holy Apostles! What a tour de force! The delightful photographic illustrations make the meticulous research come alive. Bravo!”  – Dr. Ronda Chervin, Professor Emerita of Philosophy (retired), Holy Apostles College & Seminary

“Holy Apostles College and Seminary is a place where contemplation meets action and visa versa. This book captures the kind of joy within our community that makes possible that kind of creative engagement.” – Angelyn Arden, Ph.D., Professor of Humanities, Holy Apostles College & Seminary

Whenever we leave our houses and enter the world, we’re entering mission territory. We are entering, in short, a secular culture that is highly materialistic and highly egotistic. And what are we going to encounter when we get there, which is just a step outside our front door? We’re going to encounter people who live by their appetites, who lust, excessively consume, greedily waste and horde money, and anger easily. We’re going to encounter unbelievers, and we’re going to encounter believers who do not practice their faith. We will encounter these and many more, and we are going to find that our efforts to live a faith-based life may falter in the wake of them. How do we remind ourselves to be prepared for the world and the persons we’ll encounter within it? With our new door sign, of course, reminding us that when we step out our front door, we’re entering mission territory.

Inspired by the “Entering Mission Territory” sign at the bottom of the driveway at Holy Apostles College & Seminary in Cromwell, CT. We all need this kind of reminder whenever we leave our sanctuary!

ADDITIONAL IDEAS

Bruce provides us with some excellent ideas within his book, but the idea engine never stops! Here’s another:

Mall “pop-up” stores are a popular trend for testing your product line for a couple of months without committing to a lease. They are set up in malls which are in decline and give the mall owner a chance to give more life/energy to the mall. This keeps customers from abandoning the mall as “dead.”  This is a WIN/WIN if the new business can afford to move their products in and out of the space in short order.  Nothing new, of course, as there have been popups for Halloween costumes and Christmas specialty gifts (think David’s nuts and dried fruit packs) but now, as more malls go into decline, other types of businesses are giving it a try. Since the type of shelving I propose in the book is portable and does not need to be nailed to the wall, this could work for a group, like Knights of Columbus, putting together a store – i.e., they’d have enough manpower to move the shelves and inventory in a short period of time. This “test” of the product line might be useful while building capital for the eventual permanent location.

An article on the Internet today indicated ToysRUs may go bankrupt because, in part, their brick-and-mortar venues cannot compete with Amazon.com. And, yesterday, there was an article in the Orange County Register Business section (9-17-2017) about second hand stores succeeding as traditional retailers stumble. The article noted that thrift/resale stores have grown 7 percent a year for the last two years while major department stores are having to downsize. The article goes on to note that resale stores first became popular during the recession and that clients not only love the savings but enjoy the fun of “the hunt.” This seems to support two points I made in the book: used books provide affordable merchandise, and displaying the books in a random manner adds to the fun of “the hunt.”
