Defiant Shepherds: Profiles of Catholic Resistance to Soviet Communism

by Peter Csillag

True stories of persecution, perseverance, spiritual heroism, and the triumph of faith.

The imposition of communism across Central and Eastern Europe caused immense human suffering in the twentieth century. While the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the scars left across nations continue to shape our world today, both politically and spiritually.

Defiant Shepherds profiles seven Catholic clergy from both the Western and Eastern Church that stood against this darkness: Hungarian cardinal József Mindszenty, Ukrainian bishop Nykyta Budka, Polish-American priest Walter Ciszek, Romanian bishop Valeriu Traian Frențiu, Czech cardinal Josef Beran, Polish priest Jerzy Popiełuszko, and Pope John Paul II. These are seven of the many faithful who resisted communist brutality not through armies or political power, but through fidelity to the risen Christ. Many paid for their courage with years in prisons and exile. Others paid with their lives. Their witness reminds us that even in the darkest moments of history, the light of Christ cannot be overcome.
