I Will Go Unto the Altar of God: A Reply to the Traditionalists on the Mass of Paul VI

by Gary Campbell, edited by Andrew Likoudis

A FORMER SSPX PRIEST MAKES THE CASE FOR THE MASS OF PAUL VI.

Gary Campbell knows the argument from the inside. A former priest of the Society of St Pius X, he once prayed the older rite daily, and for years knew no other. Writing as a pastor and a witness, he walks patiently through the reformed rites and answers the objections most often raised against them.

For the Catholic unsettled by what he has heard of the new Mass, and for every reader leaving traditionalism behind, this book is an invitation to approach the altar in full communion with the Church and her visible head, and to find there everything essential the Church has ever offered.

Paperback: $14.95 | Audible: $14.99 | Kindle: $9.99

TESTIMONIALS

“A former priest of the Society of Saint Pius X, Gary Campbell prayed the older rite daily before he came to the reformed Mass — and that hard-won vantage lends this book a credibility no cradle-Catholic apologist could claim. I Will Go Unto the Altar of God is an excellent primer for understanding, and answering, the disingenuous arguments the SSPX and its fellow travelers marshal against the post-conciliar liturgical reform. I found it utterly fascinating. Campbell’s patient walk through the reformed rites is cogent throughout, and his critique of the traditionalist exaltation of the Roman Canon — as though the other Eucharistic Prayers were somehow tainted — is especially welcome. Read it.” – Monsignor Arthur Holquin, S.T.L., Rector Emeritus, Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano

“A Newman-esque refrain has arisen in recent years: ‘To be deep in history is to cease to be traditionalist.’ Gary Campbell solidifies this refrain to a remarkable degree in I Will Go Unto the Altar of God, a valuable addition to the growing canon of literature responding to the traditionalist movement. This book blends deep levels of historical detail with observations of practical application (a factor very often absent in discussions of this topic), making it readily accessible both for those of a more scholarly inclination and those who might simply be wondering, ‘Why did the Mass change?’ As a former priest who celebrated the Mass according to the missal of 1962, and then as an attendee of the reformed liturgy for many years, Campbell is in a position to offer a perspective that few, if any, have thus far managed. I heartily recommend this book and have every confidence that it will assist in healing the current rifts in the Church.” – Andrew Mioni, Author of The Sacrifice of Praise: Liturgical Debates and the Fundamentals of Worship

“I Will Go Unto the Altar of God speaks to us where we are, and brings us into deeper understanding and gratitude for God’s good gifts of the liturgy and the opportunity it provides to encounter Him. If you want to learn from someone grounded, accessible, and endearing, Gary Campbell is your man! With his approachable exposition of the wisdom of the Church, I found myself both reassured that our Holy Mother, guided by the Holy Spirit, is actively caring for us and anticipating our needs, and reminded that God’s ways are not our ways, and that a trusting surrender to Him – speaking through His indefectible Church – will truly be our saving grace. This book is a resource that will accompany many souls in need of sound instruction and a peaceful haven, after being tossed about by the storms about them.” – Laura Vander Vos, Co-founder of TradRecovery.com

“Gary Campbell offers a courageous and deeply Catholic reflection on liturgical fidelity, demonstrating that authentic tradition finds its fulfillment not in separation but in communion with the Church, where Christ remains the center of worship.” – Dr. Sebastian Mahfood, OP, Lay Dominican of the Province of St. Albert the Great and co-author with Ronda Chervin of Catholic Realism
