Sacred Images and the Belief in the Real Presence: From the Patristic Era to the Present

by Lisette A. Arguello

This book argues that venerating sacred images nurtures belief in Christ’s Real Presence in the Eucharist. Through a historical survey from the Church Fathers to modern times, it shows how disrespect or removal of sacred art weakens such belief. Examining theology, art, philosophy, and sociological trends, it demonstrates a clear correlation between visible devotion and supernatural belief. The study concludes with proposed solutions to restore reverence, counter secularism, and renew understanding of the Incarnational Principle.

TESTIMONIALS

“Contemporary studies of religious practice and belief consistently show Catholics performing similar to the general population in terms of religious devotion and even knowledge of their faith. Dr. Arguello shows that if we want to draw people closer to the Eucharist, one indispensable route to do this, which has been championed by the Church through many challenges, is to unite our catechesis and spirituality to the veneration of sacred images. A tour de force drawing on history, liturgical theology, aesthetics, and even politics, this book offers a fascinating argument worthy of serious consideration.” – Luke Arredondo, PhD, Executive Director of the St. Brendan Center for Evangelization and Spirituality, Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee.
“Dr. Arguello’s book surveys the broad history of the Church on the relationship between devotion to sacred images and the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Her incarnational and sacramental approach is powerful and moving. She writes lucidly and covers a tremendous amount of history. Readers will find this book highly informative and engaging.” – Jeffrey L. Morrow, Ph.D., Professor of Theology at Franciscan University of Steubenville and Director of the St Paul Studies Center at the St Paul Center for Biblical Theology

“Lisette Arguello’s work on sacred images powerfully shows how visible signs draw the soul to the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, inspiring deeper reverence and renewing our appreciation of beauty as a path to God.” – Dr. Sebastian Mahfood, OP, co-author with Ronda Chervin of Catholic Realism: A Framework for the Refutation of Atheism and the Evangelization of Atheists
