A Gospel Path to Racial Healing

A Gospel Path to Racial Healing

A Gospel Path to Racial Healing

by Archbishop Emeritus Alfred Hughes and Deacon Larry Oney

Racial eruptions continue to highlight our need for deeper racial healing. This book begins with two contrasting stories of a black deacon and a white bishop. They recapitulate the sad history of racial servitude and discrimination, while acknowledging the uneven history of the Church’s response. Drawing on the Church’s social teaching, they then propose a Gospel path to racial healing. This brief book can serve as a manual for teaching or discussion in parishes and schools.

TESTIMONIALS

“How often have we heard the adage ‘Good things often come in small packages?’ Here is another instance of the presence of that ‘truth’ in this little gem of a book, A Gospel Path to Racial Healing. Whether you think you need racial healing or not, this book is for everyone. Not only do we read the engrossing stories of an African American Deacon and a Caucasian American Bishop on their paths to racial healing, but we see those healing methods applied through the documents of the Catholic church and the restorative justice of prayer, commitment and dedication to combatting the ills of racial injustice in education, housing and employment, among others. This little book can be carried with you on your way to work and read during your lunch hour. Wherever or whenever you read it, be assured that you will be changed even if you think you don’t need to be changed.” – Sister Marianne Postiglione, RSM

“A powerful witness to the wisdom of Christ on the way to establishing a harmony among men.” – Dr. Sebastian Mahfood, OP, author of Radical Eschatologies: Embracing the Eschaton in the Works of Ngugi Wa Thiong’o, Nuruddin Farah, and Ayi Kwei Armah

TESTIMONIALS

“Reflections, prayers, and poetry celebrate the sorrows and joys of living on earth while journeying toward heaven, from the poignant losses of a husband, a grandfather, and even a beloved dog, to the glories revealed in everything from a flower to a galaxy to the opportunity to deliver the Body of Christ to the dying.  A deeply personal and powerful book, Dianne Coyle’s A Widow’s Spiritual Journey will resonate with every reader’s heart.” – Kevin Vost, Psy.D., author of Memorize the Mass! and Memorize the Latin Mass!

“A most heartwarming, bold and uninhibited journey into the depths of one’s soul is transcribed here in a powerful and unadulterated venue that all of us can grasp and cherish with love. Dianne speaks her mind effortlessly stating ‘Everyone’s relationship to God is unique. No two are the same … We will come to know him as He reveals himself to us.’ Kudos to Diane for getting to the heart of our very being. Experience the beautiful God driven sojourn of a truly multi gifted lady as she endeavors to uncover her life mission for all of us to ponder as we also seek to decipher the essence of our life intervals. Revealing … Yes, …certainly way beyond our typical syntheses abilities. The Holy Spirit has clearly dwelt here!” – Rev. Philip Schulze

“Dianne Coyle’s spiritual writings evoke a deeply personal relationship with God in a way that is rare.  Her love for God and others shines through her essays and poems and she allows the reader a space to join her faith and see the fruits of trust in a loving God through Jesus Christ. Dianne gives a human voice to the personal mysteries of intuition, yearning, prayer and loss and she is never above the reader as a “teacher,”  she instead gently reminds us to simply ask for and seek God’s grace and then be ready for a true and personal answer from Him.  As a therapist and counselor to many afflicted with mental illness and additions I have used her poems and message to comfort some who struggled to re-find their Christian faith. I know Dianne indeed practices her faith devotedly as I have had personally from Dianne’s words and guidance as she ministered to my father during a long illness.  Dianne has a true gift for comforting others with kindness and humility.  This book gives only a glimpse of her spiritual wisdom.” – Elizabeth Driscoll Jorgenson, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselor

“When Dianne began sharing her writings with me, I was taken with her ability to evoke compassion, encouragement, and a sense of one who is there to give me support. Her work is worth sharing with the world.”  – Elaine M. Mott, M.A. Moral Theology from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, (Overbrook) Philadelphia, PA.  Elaine has served as a Director of Religious Education, addressed seminars for new DREs, and currently directs the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

“I enjoyed reading “A Widow’s Spiritual Journey” very much. I noticed that it stretches over years, so it is the result of experience, reflection, spirituality and meditation. It is the result of an experience!” – Fr. Michael Sequeira

Home for the Homily: The Sacred Art of Homiletics

Home for the Homily: The Sacred Art of Homiletics

Home for the Homily: The Sacred Art of Homiletics

by Kiki Latimer

Home for The Homily: The Sacred Art of Homiletics concerns a new and required depth of preaching the word of God within the Mass. This calls for a new and deeper appreciation of communication skills. The homilist may no longer stand separately on the shoreline nor drift in the safety of shallow waters, rather he must have the faith of Peter to “put out into deep water.” This requires depth of soul, depth of character, depth of vulnerability, and depth of skill. When Christ asks Peter to “put out into the deep water,” Peter considers his level of faith in Jesus and decides, by grace, to do so. This is a pivotal moment; without this affirmative decision there will be no catch. It is no different for the homilist today. The intimacy and depth of the effective homily requires an affirmative decision to put out into the deep. May this book help you, the homilist, put out into the deep and thereby, allow the homily to reach its four sequential destinations: the home of the Mass, the home of the Intellect, the home of the Heart, and the home of the Will, the domestic Church where homily is lived out.

Paperback: $19.95 | Kindle: $9.99

TESTIMONIALS

“The author has produced a Homiletic Masterpiece, theologically sound and pastorally relevant for seminarians, Seminary formators and the ecclesial audience. Highly recommended.” Fr. Dominic Anaeto, Professor of Pastoral Theology, Holy Apostles College & Seminary, CT

“This book Home for the Homily is OUTSTANDING. Not to covet but I wish I had written it and I have so little I could possibly add to it. I was in National Public Speaking contests… You captured ALL the core elements and the most often ignored:  GREAT PUBLIC SPEAKING TECHNIQUES, preparation… This is a work of art and needs to be on all Priests and Deacons reading list!  Thank you for this work.” – Dcn. John Silvia, Rhode Island

“I’ve known Kiki for many years and been a glad recipient of her Homiletics instruction. She offers important technical and practical insights to delivering God’s Word to the faithful, which has been invaluable. I wholeheartedly recommend her work.” Fr. Skip Thompson, MSA, Retreat Director, Santa Clara Parish, Oxnard, CA

I’ve been blessed to work with Kiki. Her guidance is simple, profound, and practical and deeply grounded in the Church’s homiletic tradition. I recommend her wisdom to both veteran homilists and preachers in initial formation. She has made a tremendous contribution to the preaching of the Church.” Fr. Erik Lenhart, OFM Cap. S.T.L. St. Lawrence Friary, Beacon, NY.

Kiki Latimer’s book is full of pungent insights into how priests should preach homilies. The fruit of years of teaching homiletics, I wish every seminarian, deacon and priest would read her book.” Dr. Ronda Chervin, retired philosophy professor, author of numerous books about Catholic Spirituality, and media presenter

— Fr. Lawrence Edward Tucker, SOLT, autor de The Prayer of Jesus Crucified, Adventures In The Father’s Joy, To Whom The Heart Decided To Love, y The Redemption of San Isidro.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

TESTIMONIALS

“There is nothing more devastating to parents than the loss of a child. The Deacon and the Doctor is a light in the darkness, providing much needed practical wisdom, refreshing insights, psychological tools, and spiritual consolation on a topic that is finally receiving the attention it deserves. This book will undoubtedly encourage parents to place their bruised and broken hearts into the pierced soul of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Deacon and the Doctor is simply the best resource available for dealing with the incredible grief of losing a child in the womb.” – Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers, Author, Behold the Man: A Catholic Vision of Male Spirituality

“This book was tremendously moving in its content and analysis of miscarriages and stillbirths, from both the psychological and spiritual point of view. Having experienced a miscarriage in the 1st trimester of my first pregnancy, it was truly a sad time, as we had been waiting three years for pregnancy to occur. The content and guidance given in this book would have been a welcomed help in overcoming the sadness felt, at that time. I commend Dr. Heisman and Deacon Anthony for their knowledge, insight and direction to put together a comprehensive set of “prescriptions to breathe again and ACQUIRE peace” as God, our loving Father, intends for all mankind. May God bless all those “little one’s”, lost to this sad ending of life.” – Ann Sadone Alisuag, LOM

“I have known Deacon Gerard-Marie Anthony before and after ordination. He is a Deacon who has a profound love of Catholic doctrine. Deacon Anthony’s research into this great need of the Church will help heal those families who have suffered the loss of a child. I highly endorse his book.” – Deacon Cody Miller

“The subject covered in this book is one of the least discussed topics in the medical and psychiatric community. From my experience as a healthcare provider, I cannot recall any conference or discussion among my colleagues relating to the impact of miscarriage/stillbirth. This book is an invaluable resource for both the physician and the clergy in helping the mother, her family and the community to recover from this traumatic experience.” – Andres Alisuag, MD
