TESTIMONIALS

“This deeply personal witness from Annabelle Moseley draws the reader into the intimacy of faith. In sharing her own heart, poetry, art, reflection, and prayer, she helps each of us find a welcome and a home in the Sacred Heart of Jesus.”  — Bishop Richard Henning, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York

“Annabelle Moseley’s Our House of the Sacred Heart is not simply good Catholic theology of the Sacred Heart but a work of art that raises the reader into the summum bonum of truth, beauty, and goodness.” — Matt Fradd, Pints with Aquinas

“In her inspirational book Our House of the Sacred Heart, Annabelle Moseley promotes devotion to the Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus. She does so by encouraging us to take refuge in His Sacred heart for “the Sacred Heart is our home.” May the prayerful reading of this devotional book increase love for Jesus Christ and inflame a desire to spread the Good News that in the midst of this often chaotic world we all have a loving, caring home, the Sacred Heart of Jesus.” — Very Rev. Peter Samuel Kucer, MSA, author of A Brief Historical Survey of Marian Devotion and Theology

Our House of the Sacred Heart is, quite simply, brilliant. It’s brilliant in the sense of genius, in the sense of uniqueness, and in the sense of imparting divine light, wisdom, and warmth. Moseley invites the reader into the home of her grandmother, the kind of home that is a sort of incarnation of our heavenly home: cozy, warm, full of love and kind words, a place of safety in storms. By drawing the reader into her family, and from life to death, she leads deeply into the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and in doing that, brings the reader to comprehend in a new way the incredible reality of Home. And it’s personal: she poses questions, lovely questions, that cause the reader to open up to God’s grace like a flower to the sun. You won’t be the same after reading this book, and you will want to go back to it again and again. Through the lens of her stories and, as I say, those “lovely questions,” you will never see home, life, suffering, death, family, friends, underlined books, dishes and tea cups, cemeteries, and yes–runs in stockings– in quite the same way, and your heart will be closer to Heaven…and you will be incredibly happy because of it.” –Keith Brant Berube, PhD candidate, author of the books Mary, the Beloved; Mary: The Rosary, the Relationship, and Dragons; and A Love Letter to Mary

RONDA: Life is a broken field of dreams for some of us. Loved ones, experience, accidents, illness, old age… each inflicting pain and suffering according to circumstance. Some of us emerge with scars on the outside and inside. We can live on the inside looking through our broken shard of glass at our lives.

DAVE: But, you might learn you CAN make a new beginning. Some of us who struggle to remain faithful through our pain like I did can begin, now! So, I invite you to join me in meeting up with Ronda Chervin. I invite you to join us in this life giving adventure along the roads of honesty and truth as we rediscover His Plan in our own journey, as Saint Benedict said, “Always a New Beginning.”

Catechism of the Catholic Church #298

Since God could create everything out of nothing, he can also, through the Holy Spirit, give spiritual life to sinners by creating a pure heart in them, and bodily life to the dead through the Resurrection. God “gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.” And since God was able to make light shine in darkness by his Word, he can also give the light of faith to those who do not yet know him.

TESTIMONIALS

“The past is gone, and the future is not yet. Always a New Beginning! is a pleasant and insightful challenge to always live in the present moment with prayerful calmness, peaceful determination, and joyful humor. It is an invitation to live life to the full, making all things new.” – Br. Francis Flaherty, OCSO, Assumption Abbey, Ava, Missouri

“This is a positive and practical book for those of us who are at least eighty, for those who are not-quite-eighty, and for all who are not-quite-not-quite-eighty. As many of us, as youngsters, gladly anticipated adolescence and adulthood, here we are aided by the authors’ experiences, their wit and wisdom, as they guide us forward. We can join our walks with theirs into our later years. The questions at the end of each chapter enable us, the readers, to join in this adventure as well, to experience our own individual healing and growth.” – Marti Armstrong, M.S.

“It is a privilege for me to recommend Always a New Beginning! Just the title is inspirational, so true and invites interest. The book is also very personal, humble, unique, and a heartwarming dialogue between the authors, which is so enjoyable to read. I have gotten to know David Dowd in the past couple of months and his revelations are so him, and I also feel like I know Ronda, without meeting her, because of their opening up of very personal and intimate thoughts and encounters. The book is really remarkable and also spiritual, by two great Catholic believers, one a lifelong teacher who is very devout, and the other a lifelong practitioner and examiner of the Catholic faith. While much of the book has timeless subjects, it also has a nice contemporary twist with the current encounter with the coronavirus pandemic. I heartily recommend its reading.” – Eugene J. O’Neill, Attorney At Law, Gould Cooksey Fennell

Always a New Beginning! is a fascinating intersection of two ”spiritual warrior” experiences which shaped their pasts and opened possibilities for “new beginnings” in the future. The Professor (Ronda) and Poet (David) share a keen appreciation that life is not always fair, but through perseverance one can choose to make a positive difference every day. Their insights serve as unique guides to a wide variety of audiences who face issues in their personal journeys. As I read the book I was struck by their humility, their celebration of our differences, and their advice on how to cope and appreciate the joy of life. They do not push themselves, rather their discussion is natural, with each of them and the reader taking part.   My experience as a reader is one I recommend. Once I started, I could not put it down! Highly recommended!” – Barry M. Costello, Vice Admiral (retired) U.S. Navy, Author of Fortune Favors Boldness: The Story of Naval Valor During Operation Iraqi Freedom

Returning Home: A Spirituality of the Christian Journey

Returning Home: A Spirituality of the Christian Journey

Returning Home: A Spirituality of the Christian Journey

The spiritual life has often been presented in terms of a journey because it is all about finding our way to God. For Christians, the spiritual journey has to do with following Christ into the mystery of the divine because he knows the way to the Father. We walk in his footsteps because we know that our happiness is intimately related to our journey into the mystery beyond the pale of death. We were made for God. Our happiness lies in him alone.

This book, which is about our spiritual journey, focuses specifically on our destination. We all long to go beyond ourselves. We all yearn for transcendence. What is more, we all want to be happy. We all wish to find rest in something greater than ourselves. Whether we believe in him or not, on some level, we also all long for God.

INTERVIEWS

TESTIMONIALS

“Fr Dennis Billy, CSsR, brings together his extensive experience as a spiritual director and retreat master, erudition, impressive credentials in moral theology and spirituality, and his skills as a writer and poet in this wonderful book on the spiritual journey. As with any authentic spiritual journey, the pilgrimage in this book is told with generosity and simplicity unfolding profound truths of how God has called us to Himself and accompanies us along the way. It is a treasure for anyone no matter where they might be on the journey home.” — Dcn Peter Lovrick, Professor of Homiletics and Director of Diaconate Formation, St. Augustine’s Seminary, Toronto. Author of Proclaiming in a New Season: a Practical Guide to Catholic Preaching in the New Evangelization

“‘We were made for God. Our happiness lies in him alone. Life is a journey that should lead us into the Heart of God – ultimately culminating in sharing an eternity with Him in heaven.’ These are the basic themes that summarize the work of Fr. Dennis J. Billy, C.Ss.R. in his book, Returning Home: A Spirituality of the Christian Journey. Within this retreat, Fr. Billy does a splendid job in guiding the reader through a simple, yet profound, reflection on the meaning of life. He explains how each soul was created by God in love in order to reach an eternal destiny with Him in heaven. Beginning with basic principles, he extrapolates these tenets by applying them practically to the reader’s pilgrimage to God, regardless of where the reader is on his or her own faith journey. This retreat would be helpful both to beginners by outlining why God created them and how they can grow in their relationship with Him as well as by those more advanced in the spiritual life by offering many reflection points through which the Holy Spirit could powerfully guide them personally deeper into the heart of God.” – Mary Kloska, author of The Holiness of Womanhood

“In this significant spiritual book, Fr. Billy explains that throughout life, every human being is on a spiritual journey to return home to Heaven, to be in the presence of God forever. As I read Fr. Billy’s book, I thought of every human being who has lived, is living, or will live, a virtual ocean of humanity, all traveling towards Heaven. Some limp and carry a heavy burden of sin; others skip along, overconfident in their spirituality; many want to go on their knees, on the roughest part of the road, to do penance for their mortal sins. Still others stroll along because they want to see where everyone is going; and some drag the things that mean the most to them in this life. And yet others try to forge a different path. In five chapters, Fr. Billy gives us the information we need to successfully navigate this journey. Although each and every person’s journey is unique in some ways, Fr. Billy clearly shows us the aspects we have in common. He gives us the signposts we must follow – and that makes this book an important spiritual aid.” — Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson, STL, MFA, Chief Academic Officer, and Professor of Dogmatic and Moral Theology, at  Holy Apostles College and Seminary, Memoirist, Radio Show Host

Billy, C.Ss.R., is Professor Emeritus of the history of moral theology and Christian spirituality at the Alphonsian Academy of the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome and currently serves as The Robert F. Leavitt Distinguished Service Chair in Theology at St. Mary’s Seminary & University in Baltimore. An American Redemptorist of the Baltimore Province, Fr. Light for the Journey: Reflections from Carmel

Light for the Journey: Reflections from Carmel

“Our Lady of Mount Carmel with Simon Stock, Angelus of Jerusalem, Maria Maddalena de’Pazzi, Teresa da Avila.” Italian painter and architect Pietro Novelli (1603-1647), dated 1641.

Light for the Journey: Reflections from Carmel

by the Association of St. Teresa

EVERY FAMILY ENJOYS celebrating the anniversaries of its members. Our Carmelite Mothers and Fathers, Brothers and Sisters have recently observed two significant events in the history of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. The year 1990 marked the two-hundredth anniversary of the arrival of four Carmelite nuns who bravely set forth by ship from Belgium to found a new monastery in America, at Port Tobacco, Maryland. In 1991 our Order celebrated the four-hundredth anniversary of the holy death of Saint John of the Cross, the companion of our foundress, Saint Teresa of Jesus. Theirs was the challenging work of establishing the Discalced Carmelites and charting their mission of renewing the Order in the spirit of Mary and the great Prophet Elijah, our models for the double spirit of prayer and contemplation. Here, in 2021, the thirtieth anniversary of that celebration sparks the occasion for the release of a new edition of our calendar – with all the grace the 21st century has to offer – the instant gratification of a Kindle for the traveler on the go, the handy 2-day delivery of a paperback for beach-reader on a monastic shore, and the premium, deluxe new issue of a flat-layable, spiral-bound, glossy-paged, multi-color gift book for the scholar’s desk.

From the fountain of Elijah on Mount Carmel there has poured forth a river of living spiritual water, overflowing its boundaries and coursing down through the riverbeds of the centuries even unto our present day. Expressions of praise of God, descriptions of spiritual graces, explanations of Sacred Scripture—all these and more have issued forth from the minds and hearts of hundreds of Carmelites living in many different countries and expressing their thoughts in a variety of languages. Our contemporary Carmelite nuns have reflected upon some of these passages and, in this small book, have shared with us their own thoughts arising from their personal experience of life in Carmel.

Each Sister had an opportunity to choose a passage and comment upon it. You will find reflections made by young Carmelites now in their period of formation, and by others who have lived the life for many more years, and have already celebrated their Golden Jubilee. Perhaps you will feel prompted to add a few more lines, the fruit of your own meditation. We did not choose to add footnotes or give sources; this is rather a family-style book in which we informally pondered the messages of those who have preceded us. Then, one day, we shall all meet and embrace in the Eternal Kingdom to continue our vocation of expressing our praise, gratitude and love.

Kindle: $9.99 | Paperback: $14.95 | Glossy Spiral-Bound Version: $19.95 plus $6 shipping

If you’re looking for a beautiful gift version, seek no further than the glossy spiral-bound version that lays flat on the desk with the wisdom of Mount Carmel rising from the calendar pages at every downward glance. Order your copy now via this PayPal link below, and the Carmelite charisms will soon begin to guide your spiritual journey home!

It is our mutual hope and prayer that you will join with us day by day, not only in reading thereflections, but also by uniting with us in our continuing prayer for all who seek the Lord—and for all who have found Him and are working and praying to make His Love better known to those whom He has come to lead back to Our Heavenly Father.

Solemn Novena to Our Lady of Mount Carmel delivered by Bishop Robert J. Hermann

TESTIMONIALS

“Come Alive in Jesus provided me with valuable insights that will help me with my main desire in life—to get closer to God. I was particularly enlightened and grateful to read Bishop Hermann’s words on ‘Unilateral Forgiveness’ and the freedom it brings. I can see where his novel perspectives naturally lend themselves to life-changing experiences for the novice as well as the mature Christian.” – Robert Hanley, Actor, Author of Do You See What I See?: Discovering the Obvious

“A love story–that’s what we’re living, a divine romance with the Holy Trinity and Our Lady, in every present moment, complete with battles against dragons. That’s why we love fairy tales, we’re created to live one! Most people don’t know this, or how to live it; Bishop Hermann’s booklet is a primer on this love story, from the need for interior quiet and praising God, to addressing some of the more tricky aspects, like worrying and the invisible action of evil spirits…but as he makes clear from beginning to end, in this real fairy tale-love story there is the safe harbor of the Immaculate Heart of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, who can transform each of us into Christ, into a beloved son of our Father.” — Keith Berube, author of Mary, the Beloved and Mary: The Rosary, the Relationship, and Dragons.

“Don’t let this book’s small size fool you. Forgiveness, joy, hope, freedom – Christ’s light streams forth from its pages. Lives will be changed.” — Shane Kapler, author of Marrying the Rosary to the Divine Mercy Chaplet

“I love Bishop Hermann’s book. It is brisk, pithy, humorous with concrete examples, but also cutting through like a two edged sword our excuses and defenses against becoming more holy.” — Dr. Ronda Chervin, Emerita Professor of Philosophy at Holy Apostles College and Seminary, and co-author with Al Hughes of Simple Holiness: A Six-Week Walk on the Mountain of God

“A spiritual tour de force for every kind of retreat.” – Dr. Sebastian Mahfood, OP, Lay Dominican of the Province of St. Albert the Great

TESTIMONIALS

“What enrichment to my Catholic faith I have received by reading Fr Martens’ book! I feel blessed to have the opportunity to receive a new depth of understanding in the celebration of the Mass. Thank you, Fr. Martens, for revealing these many complex mysteries to us.” –Mrs. Pamela Paull

At Mass with Jesus on Calvary is concise and yet surprisingly rich; as reasonable as it is pious; as suffused with Scripture as with the Church’s magisterial teachings. Fr. Gene Martens spreads ray after ray of illuminating light on the hidden Deity of the Eucharist, on the Christ Who invites us to join Him on Calvary that we one day may come to see Him face to face. I highly recommend this book to all who seek greater understanding the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and more intimate union with Christ.” – Kevin Vost, Psy.D., author of books including Memorize the Mass!, Memorize the Latin Mass! and 12 Life Lessons from St. Thomas Aquinas

“For many years, we had the honor of hosting retreats for alumni and friends at Rockhurst High School that were led by Fr. Martens. Each were filled with messages like those in his book about Christ’s gift of the Eucharist. His book brings to life for the reader the beauty and meaning of these celebrations, which are so central to our Catholic faith and Jesuit spirituality. Fr. Martens Christ-like way of presenting these profoundly life-changing themes is a true gift for the faithful who will open his or her heart to the Lord.” – Laurence W. Freeman, Chief Advancement Officer, Rockhurst High School

“Fr. Martens’ book provides detailed connections between scripture, mass prayers, and church documents. We appreciate most his early point: ‘The Eucharist is not just a matter of our personal union with Jesus in Holy Communion. It also obliges and enables us to imitate Jesus in serving others.’” – Mike and Carol Mathews, Married couple, parents, and long-time residents of the Midwest. Mike worked for Celebration Magazine and is active in social service efforts. Carol was liturgist for Holy Spirit Parish and is active in diocesan liturgy work.

“Father Martens’ book At Mass with Jesus on Calvary will be an inspiring companion for all Catholics, especially teachers in parochial schools, PSR and RCIA programs, liturgies and all participants in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Readers will gain deep insights and feel Father’s profound reverence on every page.” – Charlene Nauert, Member of the St. Louis Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission

“Father Martens’ deep personal faith and devotion to the Eucharist is evident as he guides the reader to a deeper understanding of the Real Presence and invites us all to a fuller participation in the Mass through enhancing our awareness and comprehension.” – Patricia M Balke, PhD, author & educator, In God’s Image: Male and Female

“Fr. Martens gives us an insightful reminder into the beliefs of our Catholic faith, the Eucharist and the Mass. His examination is a thought-provoking journey into a better understanding of the Transubstantiation, giving biblical references and theological background for this gift to us. It is an important book for those who want to search further into the doctrine supporting this sacrament, those who are religious educators, or those who are preparing for Lay Ministry in the church.” – Sharon A. Curry, Catechist, and Eucharistic Minister

“Fr. Marten’s knowledge and understanding of the Eucharistic presence, the core of the Catholic belief, is an insightful reflection of his personal faith and hope. It affirms the words of the hymn, “without seeing you, we love you, without seeing you, we believe, you are our Savior, we believe in you.” – Sr. Carlene Welker, D.C., Pastoral Associate, Our Lady of the Holy Cross, St. Louis, MO

“Fr. Martens provides an awareness of key words and phrases in the Eucharistic prayers that gives the lay person a new depth of meaning while enriching their understanding of the Mass. This book would be excellent for a small-group study of the Mass.” – Patricia A. Meyer, LLM, Lay Pastoral Ministry Institute of the Diocese of St. Petersburg, FL

“Knowledge and the ability to teach are two separate gifts. Fr. Martens has both and demonstrates it with this book. When he addresses a student’s question on the Real Presence, ‘how do you squeeze a man into that tiny piece of bread?’ – it shows he is in touch with the person in the pew.” – Roger F. Meyer, Scripture Study Facilitator, Blessed Sacrament Parish, Seminole, FL

“Fr. Gene Martens provides a beautiful explication of the sacred gift of the Eucharist. Through his ordinary language and insightful metaphors, he offers a valuable resource that is vibrant and compelling as well as easy to understand–perfect for use in adult formation programs in a parish setting and preparation material for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.” – Angie Doerr, Director of Religious Education Emerita, St. Francis Xavier College Church, St. Louis, Missouri
“The thoughts of Fr. Gene Martens on the Eucharist are in spiritual harmony with St. Paul who describes faithful followers as the body of Christ. All who love the Eucharist as communal celebration with the real presence of Christ will be enriched by this book.” – Vic Hummert, Hospital Jail Chaplain
“In this book, far from struggling, faith and reason celebrate together. It’s one of the miracles of the Eucharist. This is a comforting read, reminding us page after page that the Truth does not change. Expressions might and ought to; Truth does not. Our intellects, like a searchlight that doesn’t reach so far, cannot penetrate the mystery but can indeed throw light on the wonders of the Sacrament. Fr Martens has done all of that and written it in plain language and vivid image.” – Fr Joe Tetlow, SJ
“Evident in this book is the author’s years of success in the classroom. His style is clear and informative, always geared toward the student – of any age.  I recommend this book to those who are seeking to deepen their love and devotion to the Eucharist as well as to those in adult formation programs in parish settings. They won’t need a discussion starter.” – Sr. Marianne Postiglione, RSM, Associate Director, Emerita, ITEST

“I highly recommend this book because Father’s spiritual life has allowed him to live his words and reflect to those who know him a better relationship with our God. I am excited to recommend this book and know it will bless many with his knowledge and efforts.” – Carol Atchity, BVM
