The Human Person: A Bioethical Word

The Human Person: A Bioethical Word

The Human Person: A Bioethical Word

by Francis Etheredge

Is bioethics a technical specialization or a profound expression of human being? Wonderfully answering this question, the book is beautifully enriched by eight Forewords. Beginning again and again, Etheredge searches old and new sources that help us to understand who we are: both personally and objectively – gazing into the mysterious depths of human personhood. Why are we “from” relationship, “in” relationship and “for” relationship? He then goes on to explore the specific difficulties that make it urgent that we formally recognize that the gift of human being founds our equal dignity before God and each other.

The foreword to the book is written by Dr. Mary Anne Urlakis. Seven other contributors provide valuable introductions to individual chapters: Joseph Meaney, Adriana Vasquez, Anthony Williams, Elizabeth Rex, Kathleen Sweeney, Richard Conrad, OP, and Ralph Weimann.

Faith and Reason: The Cradle of Truth

Faith and Reason: The Cradle of Truth

Faith and Reason: The Cradle of Truth

by Dr. Gerard M. Verschuuren

Of course, it’s a travesty, but a very widely held one. We all have heard how some people caricature religious believers. On weekdays, they are critical, want proofs, look for arguments, and believe something only if there is no further doubt. Then, on Sundays, they turn a switch, set their understanding to zero and their gaze on infinity. The contrast painted in this parody is clear: Religious believers live a schizophrenic life. It is the life of reason on weekdays and the life of faith on Sundays. This perceived contrast cannot be true, though. It is based on distorted and shallow concepts of faith, reason, and the differences between the two, as we will see in this book.

TESTIMONIALS

“This book is not a moment too soon. One of the signs of our times has to be the displacement of both faith and reason by a tyranny of the emotive. Truth is no longer found at the intersection of faith and reason but is now located in vague, individual sentiment. The way out of this cultural morass is for clear minds and holy hearts to lead the way. Gerard Verschuuren has proven himself to be such a guide in this important book.” — Fr. Joseph M. Gile, S.T.D., Dean of Graduate Studies and Adult and Continuing Education, Newman University, Wichita, KS

“If you are searching for a Catholic book on the link between philosophy and theology that you can actually understand, look no further. Faith and Reason is a clearly written exposition and defense of man’s ability to know God and his creation. Gerard Verschuuren sets forth a truly Catholic appreciation of our place in the universe: man is a free, rational creature with an eternal destiny. His reasoning power allows him to understand who he is, who God is and to discover that the embrace of God by the act of faith is the fulfillment of our being and of every true and good desire in the human heart.” -— Fr. Gerald E. Murray, J.C.D., Pastor of Holy Family Church in New York City, NY, Commentator for religion on EWTN and Fox News

TESTIMONIALS

“[An] impressive book. I hadn’t been familiar with Father Canavan’s writings, but I am finding his columns a profoundly instructive delight.” — Judge James L. Buckley

This new and timely edition of the essays of Francis Canavan, S.J., will be welcomed by everyone who heeds the prophecies of recent popes that our age is marked by a crisis of reason. – Stephen M. Fields, S.J., from the introduction

In a world that often fails to recognize true values, those of us who seek to evangelize the culture run the risk of drowning in incoherence or submitting to the temptations of worldly idols. Here, a wise Jesuit Father will help you have none of it! This book empowers the reader to see beyond the daily distractions of politics, culture, and our overstimulated lives, and keep the focus on the truth in Christ. – Kathryn Jean Lopez, senior fellow, National Review Institute & editor-at-large, National Review

To read these essays is to be reminded what a master teacher and pastor Canavan was, for everything he wrote was geared toward one end: our salvation, and the glory of God – William Doino Jr., contributor, First Things

Testimonials from Readers:

I found Fun is Not Enough to be interesting, frequently amusing and quite insightful. Even though many of Fr. Canavan’s articles were written 30 years ago, they define and clarify problems that dog our society today. I’m glad I read the book! – Barbara Bryan

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Francis Canavan, S.J. (1917-2009) was a professor of political science at Fordham University, a leading Edmund Burke scholar, and an essayist whose thoughts on faith, politics, and culture earned him accolades from many prominent Catholic minds of his time, including Robert P. George, George Weigel, Richard John Neuhaus, and Gerard V. Bradley.

But Canavan’s appeal extended well beyond the intelligentsia. For more than twenty-five years, he contributed to the catholic eye newsletter, making his wisdom accessible to the ordinary person in the pew. Fun Is Not Enough collects all the prophetic insights catholic eye readers loved, so that Canavan may inspire a new generation with his contributions to contemporary debates on religious and political liberty, the dignity of human life, and the nature of marriage.

History of the Eucharist

History of the Eucharist

History of the Eucharist

by Roger Skrenes

The Eucharist is not a topic of the moment. Like any good teacher, God took “his time” in revealing the Eucharist slowly, step by step, throughout Biblical history. In this history there are two main tracks: 1) the history of bread and its use in the Old Testament and 2) the sacrificial lamb of the Old Testament Passover. These two tracks point to the Last Supper and the Cross. The story of the Lamb, of course, continues with the Resurrection and Eternal Life. This book tells this story.

Political Science from a Catholic Perspective

Political Science from a Catholic Perspective

Political Science from a Catholic Perspective

by Fr. Peter Samuel Kucer, MSA

Today, many specializations within the field of political science identify it particularly as a social science, and these are namely political theory, government and politics, comparative politics, international relations, political economy, public administration, and public policy. This text book, which has a special emphasis on US politics, introduces students to the study of politics as a social science according to these categories, integrating into its introduction a philosophical dimension resonant with our Catholic faith.

Paperback $19.99 | Kindle $9.99

TESTIMONIALS

Fr. Kucer combines in a skillful way a thorough study of life and history that is a necessary part of the science, but avoids the danger, on the one side, of slipping into moral relativism, a feature of much secular political science, and, on the other side, of falling into the false absolutism of the various political ideologies that has been too often the sad experience of modern times. – Dr. Donald Boland, President, Centre for Catholic Studies, Inc., Sydney, Australia

Fr. Peter Samuel Kucer, MSA, has produced quite a grand opus in his collection of works on Marian Devotion, Catholic Church History, East and South East Asian History, Catholic Apologetics, Protology and the Priesthood, Western Civilization and Political Science. Each of his books provides wisdom for the beginner and clarity for the educated. – Dr. Sebastian Mahfood, OP, Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies, Holy Apostles College & Seminary

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Very Rev. Peter Samuel Kucer, MSA, STD is President-Rector at Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, CT. He received degrees from Middlebury College, Holy Apostles College and Seminary, the Dominican House of Studies, and the Catholic University of America.
