A Rational Case for Life: Why the Unborn Matter

by Randal L. N. Mandock

This book was written as an advocacy for redefining terms related to pregnancy and its complications. The author considered this necessary because of the confusion among many about the scope of the challenges to the birth of babies in modern societies. The book proposes a method of revising definitions and terminology to make them more precise, accurate, and relevant than those currently in use.

Primarily religious in nature, the book addresses the misdirection and disinformation often found in counseling that favors abortion over birth, the nature of true religion and of life, the problems of in vitro fertilization and contraception, the origin and nature of man as willed by God, the nature of the one true God and His relationship to man, uncertainty in matters of human conception and pregnancy, the dignity of one human life, and a method and justification for a more accurate redefinition of medical terms related to pregnancy and abortion.

History demonstrates that the Magisterium of the Catholic Church has, for two millennia, charted a masterful path between authority and reason in man’s understanding of the origin and nature of human life. This is evident recently in its recognition, once again, of the virtue of prudence in assessing the start of an individual’s life.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Randal Mandock enjoyed two parallel careers for most of his working life: physical scientist and religious educator. His formal technical education includes a B.S. in geology from UTEP, an M.S. in astro-geophysics from ICR, an M.S. in geophysical sciences, and a Ph.D. in earth and atmospheric sciences from the Georgia Institute of Technology. In his doctoral dissertation, he developed a phased-array radar for imaging atmospheric turbulence. His post-military technical career included research and teaching assistantships at UTEP and GTRI, research fellowships at three USAF laboratories, geophysicist positions at Phillips Petroleum Company and ARCO Oil and Gas, an associate professor position at Clark Atlanta University, and faculty positions at Holy Spirit Preparatory School.

Dr. Mandock’s training in religion encompasses the first year of formation for the Catholic diaconate and three levels of catechesis certification. His career in religion spanned four decades as a catechist, internet apologist, and director of religious education at a Catholic parish. He was discharged honorably from the USMC with the rank of sergeant.
