Fr. Dennis J. Billy, C.Ss.R., profoundly enriches Catholic life through his more than fifty books and hundreds of articles on moral theology, spiritual direction, and Eucharistic devotion. Fr. Dennis J. Billy, C.Ss.R. is an American Redemptorist priest from the Baltimore Province, ordained in 1980. Raised in Staten Island, NY, he earned an A.B. in English Literature from Dartmouth College, then went on to earn multiple advanced degrees: a Th.D. in Church History from Harvard Divinity School, an M.A. in Medieval Studies from the University of Toronto, an M.M.R.Sc. in Moral Theology from KU Leuven, an S.T.D. in Spirituality from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas (Angelicum), and a D.Min. in Spiritual Direction from the Graduate Theological Foundation.
From 1988 to 2008 he taught moral theology and Christian spirituality at the Alphonsian Academy of the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. He has held the John Cardinal Krol Chair of Moral Theology at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood, PA and has served as Karl Rahner Professor of Catholic Theology at the Graduate Theological Foundation in Mishawaka, Indiana. In the spring of 2025, he retired from St. Mary’s Seminary & University in Baltimore, having held the Robert F. Leavitt Distinguished Service Chair in Theology and having served as Professor of Moral Theology and Spirituality.
Fr. Billy is a prolific author and scholar—publishing over fifty books and hundreds of articles on moral theology, spirituality, spiritual direction, and Eucharistic devotion—while also teaching, leading retreats, and offering spiritual direction across North America and Europe
