ABOUT THE EDITORS

The Most Rev. Felipe J. Estévez was born Feb. 5, 1946, in Havana, Cuba, and arrived in the United States on an Operation Pedro Pan flight as a teenager. He was ordained in 1970 and has done extensive studies in spiritual theology, earning a doctorate from Gregorian University in Rome. He is fluent in English, Spanish, French and Italian. From 2001 to 2003, Bishop Estévez served as spiritual director of St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, Fla. where he served as rector from 1980 to 1986. He was the pastor of St. Agatha Parish in Miami for 14 years, while also directing campus ministry at Florida International University. Appointed Auxiliary Bishop on Nov. 21, 2003, and ordained Jan. 7, 2004, he oversaw the archdiocese’s Ministry of Pastoral Services including family life, youth, campus, prison and respect life ministries, as well as all church movements and new communities. In 2010, he was appointed Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Miami. On April 27, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI named Auxiliary Bishop Felipe J. Estévez the tenth Bishop of St. Augustine. He was installed on June 2, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jacksonville. Bishop Estévez is the second of three children (Carlos and Marty) of the late Adriano and Estrella Estévez.

The Most Rev. Andrew Cozzens, S.T.D., is the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. He worked in seminary formation for 8 years as a formator in the external forum, professor, and interim rector. He currently serves as the President of the Seminary Formation Council, of which he is also a founding member, and the President of the Institute for Priestly Formation based in Omaha Nebraska. His doctoral dissertation, Imago Vivens Iesu Christi Sponsi Ecclesiae: The Priest as a Living Image of Jesus Christ the Bridegroom of the Church through the Evangelical Counsels, focused on the relationship between the priesthood and the evangelical counsels based on the priest’s call to live in imitation of Christ, the Bridegroom of the Church.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Paula Witkowski, an Associate Professor at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, previously worked in both elementary and secondary schools for twenty-seven years as a speech-language pathologist/reading specialist. When she earned her Ph.D. in Literacy in 2004, her research for her dissertation focused on developing content area reading courses in World History and U.S. History for 10th and 11th grade special education students. Data collected and analyzed during this period demonstrated that content area reading strategies do serve to increase reading skills significantly as well as help struggling students learn content materials. Currently, Dr. Witkowski is teaching reading methods courses for B.A. and M.A.T. majors in education and for teachers seeking an M.A. in reading and certification as reading specialists. She’s married with five adult children, nine grandchildren, and one wonderful dog named Parker, who has been trained as a “reading dog” so that she can visit area schools and have students practice reading to her.

Dianne Swenson Koehnecke has been teaching since she was 21. She taught seventh and eighth grade language arts, as well as twelfth grade English. Then she became a reading (literacy) specialist. After earning her Ph.D., she taught Content Area Reading to both undergraduate and graduate students. She also taught Children’s Literature and Young Adult Literature. At the age of 12, she sold her first essay to The American Girl magazine. She wrote six Fast Track books which each contained six short stories. Fast Tracks are designed for resistant young adult readers. These books, published by Perfection Learning in the mid-1980’s, are still in print today. In 2016, Dianne wrote a young adult novel titled Nowhere to Go but Home. She also edited a biography about John and Anna Timko. Dianne is married with three adult children and six grandchildren. Her hobbies are water aerobics, walking and participating in two different book clubs. She lives in St. Louis and Sunrise Beach, Missouri.

Bruce provides us with some excellent ideas within his book, but the idea engine never stops! Here’s another:

Mall “pop-up” stores are a popular trend for testing your product line for a couple of months without committing to a lease. They are set up in malls which are in decline and give the mall owner a chance to give more life/energy to the mall. This keeps customers from abandoning the mall as “dead.”  This is a WIN/WIN if the new business can afford to move their products in and out of the space in short order.  Nothing new, of course, as there have been popups for Halloween costumes and Christmas specialty gifts (think David’s nuts and dried fruit packs) but now, as more malls go into decline, other types of businesses are giving it a try. Since the type of shelving I propose in the book is portable and does not need to be nailed to the wall, this could work for a group, like Knights of Columbus, putting together a store – i.e., they’d have enough manpower to move the shelves and inventory in a short period of time. This “test” of the product line might be useful while building capital for the eventual permanent location.

An article on the Internet today indicated ToysRUs may go bankrupt because, in part, their brick-and-mortar venues cannot compete with Amazon.com. And, yesterday, there was an article in the Orange County Register Business section (9-17-2017) about second hand stores succeeding as traditional retailers stumble. The article noted that thrift/resale stores have grown 7 percent a year for the last two years while major department stores are having to downsize. The article goes on to note that resale stores first became popular during the recession and that clients not only love the savings but enjoy the fun of “the hunt.” This seems to support two points I made in the book: used books provide affordable merchandise, and displaying the books in a random manner adds to the fun of “the hunt.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Born in Glendale, CA, Bruce Mac Vicar earned his B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard with a tour of duty in the Presidential Honor Guard and followed that as a job placement counselor at U.C.S.B. and as a records manager for banks and the national archives.

He was the co-founder of a crisis counseling center in Isla Vista, CA, and was elected member of the Isla Vista Community Council.

Over the years, Bruce developed six used bookstores in CA, an experience he happily shares in the pages of his book.

A convert to Catholicism, Bruce is a third degree Knights of Columbus. He has been happily married for 36 years to his good wife, Ann.
