ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Ronda Chervin, Ph.D. is a professor of Philosophy, widow, grandmother, and great grandmother. She has taught at Loyola Marymount University, St. John’s Seminary of Los Angeles, Franciscan University of Steubenville, Our Lady of Corpus Christi, and Holy Apostles Seminary and College. She is the author of numerous books about Catholic living and presents on EWTN and Catholic Radio. Most well known of her books are The Way of Love, Treasury of Women Saints, Avoiding Bitterness in Suffering: How our Heroes in Faith Found Peace amid Sorrow, and, most recently, with co-author Albert Hughes: Escaping Anxiety on the Road to Spiritual Joy. 

David E. Dowd, a self-described repentant Catholic poet and former insurance underwriter, is a Pro-Life Activist who has been involved in street preaching in Boston. He is the author of Love, Life, Family & the Boston Red Sox. Book of Poetry.

EVERY FAMILY ENJOYS celebrating the anniversaries of its members. Our Carmelite Mothers and Fathers, Brothers and Sisters have recently observed two significant events in the history of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. The year 1990 marked the two-hundredth anniversary of the arrival of four Carmelite nuns who bravely set forth by ship from Belgium to found a new monastery in America, at Port Tobacco, Maryland. In 1991 our Order celebrated the four-hundredth anniversary of the holy death of Saint John of the Cross, the companion of our foundress, Saint Teresa of Jesus. Theirs was the challenging work of establishing the Discalced Carmelites and charting their mission of renewing the Order in the spirit of Mary and the great Prophet Elijah, our models for the double spirit of prayer and contemplation. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Robert J. Hermann was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of St. Louis in 1963 and ordained a Bishop in 2002.

He began his ministry in Weingarten, Missouri, and taught in the Archdiocesan high schools and taught English for twelve years at St. Louis Prep North. He also served as pastor for a total of twenty years, first at St. Andrew Parish and then at Incarnate Word Parish in Chesterfield. It was at Incarnate Word Parish that he was instrumental in starting the LIFE TEEN program. He has also had the privilege of working in the Catholic Renewal, which has impacted the lives of countless people who need this healing ministry.

After ordination to the episcopacy, he was appointed a Vicar General and Archdiocesan Administrator. In December of 2010, he became Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus.

In August of 2017, Bishop Hermann began serving as a part-time Spiritual Director at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary.

He is most grateful for the incredible opportunities God has given him to serve.

Fr. Gene Martens, SJ, holds Licentiate Degrees in Philosophy and Theology from St. Louis University. He also holds a Certificate of Higher Religious Education from the Institut Pastorale Cathechetique of the Catholic Faculty at the University of Strasbourg, in France.

From 1966 to 1976, Fr. Martens taught religion at Rockhurst Jesuit High School in Kansas City, Missouri. During those years, in the wake of Vatican Council II, he gave numerous religious conferences to parents and helped to present a diocesan training program for religion teachers. He was a member of the editorial team which produced A New Look at Life, published by Paulist Press in 1970, as the eighth-grade program for the English language version of the “Come to the Father” series of religion texts.

Over the years from 1966 until the present, Fr. Martens has preached dozens of retreats to Religious Women, lay women and men, and also a few to high-school students. In addition, he has given many Days of Recollection or Spiritual Conferences to priests and other adults and even a few talks to children. As part of most of these various forms of spiritual education, Fr. Martens included lectures on the nature and meaning of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
