Children of Pain

by Elizabeth Bryan

Kelton is a village on the edge. Dangers abroad and conspiracies within threaten the future of this quaint settlement while its intrepid farmers struggle to meet their feudal agricultural quotas. Only the ranger Col—son of Kelton’s secretive ruling matriarch—seeks to uncover the truth about Kelton so he can save it from the predations of the devious Lord Hugh, whose rival town of Algar claims supremacy over Kelton and its people. Mystery follows mystery in this exciting medieval drama—what secrets does Kelton’s ruling lady hold buried deep in her past? Why is Lord Hugh so determined to seize Kelton for himself? Who is the mysterious stranger bringing Col word of imminent danger? And what does Col’s estranged brother Hawk have to do with it all? Set in the 14th-century English countryside during the heyday of feudalism, Children of Pain is a tale of intrigue, family, and redemption, played out against the backdrop of one of England’s most colorful periods.

TESTIMONIALS

“Elizabeth Byran’s debut novel, Children of Pain, reveals an exceptionally gifted writer able to transport readers to enriching historical settings with engaging characters and unique plot development.  While reading the original draft, I found myself deeply engrossed and informed by this Medieval tale of timeless conflicts and how they might reveal underlying truth for resolution.  Given the dearth of worthy fictional reading for Catholic youth, Bryan promises to fill that breach, now and in the future, as she more hones her innate story telling abilities.” – Patricia Hershwitzky, Ed.S., author of Teaching the City of God in the City of Man: Pursuing Salvation Education and Speaking One’s Soul: Magnifying God’s Word in a Madly Godless World

“Elizabeth Bryan’s Children of Pain is a superb portrayal of life in an English village during the feudal era. I read a lot of historical literature, and Elizabeth’s work stands out for its commitment to recreating medieval English culture with admirable exactitude. Woven around a story of intrigue, political machination, and family drama, Children of Pain superbly captures both the beauty and struggle of medieval life.” – Phillip Campbell, author of The Story of Civilization series

Children of Pain is a gripping fantasy tale of hope and courage, where the light within overcomes even the deepest shadows.” – Dr. Sebastian Mahfood, OP, author of The Narrative Spirituality of Dante’s Divine Comedy
